The surface appearance quality standards for titanium foil are primarily governed by the national standard GB/T 3622-2023, “Titanium and Titanium Alloy Strips and Foils.” This standard sets forth clear requirements for surface defects, surface finish, and color uniformity of titanium foil (with a thickness of less than 0.10 mm), thereby ensuring its reliability in high-end applications such as precision manufacturing, electronics, and medical devices.
I. Core Requirements for Surface Appearance Quality (Based on GB/T 3622-2023)
The surface shall be smooth and clean.
The surface of titanium foil shall be free from defects that impair serviceability, such as cracks, folds, delamination, blisters, inclusions, oxidation discoloration, severe scratches, or corrosion marks. Minor localized shadows or color variations that do not cause the thickness to exceed the permissible tolerance are permitted.
Permissible Range of Minor Defects
Minor roll marks, vibration patterns, or localized color variations are acceptable, provided they do not compromise the material’s continuity or subsequent processing performance.
Minor scratches or dents on the surface are permissible, provided that their depth does not exceed half of the thickness tolerance and they are not densely distributed.
Edge Quality Requirements
The edges shall be neat and free of obvious burrs, cracks, or curled edges. For applications requiring subsequent stamping or welding, the edges must be deburred to prevent stress concentrations that could lead to cracking.
Cleanliness and Contamination Control
Finished titanium foil shall be kept clean, free from oil stains, water marks, fingerprints, dust, and other foreign contaminants. In particular, for applications in electronic packaging and medical implantation, packaging and transportation must be conducted in a cleanroom environment.
Visual Requirements for Roll-Style Supply
When titanium foil is supplied in coil form, the following requirements apply:
The roll material is neatly arranged, with no collapsed rolls, loose rolls, or misaligned layers.
No foreign matter shall be entrapped between layers to prevent crushing or scratching;
The outer layer shall be wrapped with a protective film or moisture-proof paper to prevent damage during transportation.
II. Testing Methods and Criteria for Determination
Visual inspection: Under natural light or an equivalent light source, examine with the naked eye from a distance of 30 cm; products with no obvious defects are considered合格.
Magnified Inspection: For critical applications (such as aerospace and medical devices), a 5–10× magnifying glass may be used to assist in the inspection of minute defects.
Surface roughness inspection: According to the customer agreement, certain high-precision applications require the provision of Ra values (e.g., Ra ≤ 0.4 μm), which are measured using a profilometer.
Nondestructive Testing: For special applications, eddy current testing or ultrasonic testing may be used to detect internal continuity defects.
